Boys GMC Recap

Posted on: October 19, 2020
GMC Recap
We missed not having the other half of our team with us this weekend.  It wasn't the same without you!  The Oak Hills girls team started the day off in thrilling fashion by beating Lakota East by 1 point to earn 2nd place; the highest girls team finish since 2008!  Congrats to Coach Shellie Hageman for being voted GMC Coach of the Year by her peers!

In the boys varsity race, our team finished in 4th.  This is the highest finish since I have been head coach and I am very pleased with everyone's efforts!  Our squad tied Sycamore at 117 points, but our sixth man beat Sycamore's 6th man by just 2 seconds, which broke the tie and sealed our place!  The last time Oak Hills beat Sycamore at the GMC Championships was 2012.  James Schmidt led the way for our boys with a 3rd place finish; the best finish by an Oak Hills boy since 2013.

The individuals of our boys team had a mixture of feelings after their races, with some guys excited about their times and others wishing for a bit more.  Everyone has aspirations of finishing their season or their career on a high note, but the sport of cross country is a fickle master.  For some reason, the meet today, including all teams, just didn't produce the number of personal bests that we usually see.  Shout out to Morgan White, Noah Mckee and Nate Srode for the only guys on our team to pull off PRs.  The most complete preparation, razor sharp focus and purest desire sometimes just isn't enough though, to make the clock stop where a runner wants it to.  Our three beloved senior captains ran their last high school cross country races this weekend.  Zack Kroger, Alex Schmidt and Connor Horn competed with as much determination and heart as they always do, and we're proud of them for it.  Remember guys, it isn't your last race that the team will fondly remember you for, but instead for the 4 years of memories and friendship that you've given us.
