Elder Recap Week 6

Posted on: April 23, 2024

Elder Recap
It seemed like it would never come, but the weather finally gave us a break last week.  The Highlanders showed up to Elder and took care of business across the entire meet.  The boys and girls combined for a total of 14 event champions.  The girls were a close runner up to Seton and the boys were team champions.  You can bet those two teams will show up to Best of the West next week with plans to beat our squads, but I like our chances.

Both the boys and girls teams also won the Elder JV invitational the day before varsity.  Great work!

Congrats to the boys 4x100 relays team of Israel Conner, Ryan Linenkugel, Tion Starr, and Amon'tae Johnson who broke the school record in a time of 43.99!

Athletes of the Week
Varsity
Ra'niyah Martin- Ra'niyah has been a standout team member for Oak Hills the past several weeks.  Her focus and hard work have really been paying off.  At Elder, Ra'niyah won the 100m, was part of the winning 4x100 relay and finished 4th in the 200m.  So far she has achieved #6 on the Oak Hills all time list in the 200m and #4 in the 100m.

Annabelle Hageman- Annabelle is one of Oak Hills' strongest leaders.  She has helped lead the way for the mid distance group this season, racing most frequently in the 4x800 and 800m.  At Elder she placed 2nd and 1st in these events, respectively.  Annie is also #10 on the Oak Hills all time list for the 800m.

Hunter Shouse- Hunter has been a great addition to the team during his first year as a track & field athlete.  He started as a sprinter, but voluntarily moved up to mid distance to fill a gap that our team had.  As a mid distance runner, Hunter has flourished.  He was part of the 4x800 relay team that won at Elder and was 3rd in the 800m.  He also ran very well in the JV 400m and 200m the day before.

Aiden Whitaker- Aiden has overcome a rough start to his season with a second place finish in the discus at Elder.  He is Oak Hills' top thrower and has high hopes to place among the top in the GMC and District in the coming weeks.  The leadership that Aiden has shared with the throwing group has been invaluable to the team's development.

JV
Jeremiah Triggs- After a strong start to his training in the winter, Jeremiah suffered an injury that we thought might have ended his season.  Luckily, he has been able to make a return and competed for his first week at Elder.  He high jumped at both the varsity and JV meets and won them both!  He added a 6th place finish in the 100 at the JV meet, as well.

Emory Charles- Emory had a particularly difficult list of events at Elder.  She started pole vaulting, had to run across the field to race in the 4x8, ran back to finish vaulting then went straight to the start line for the 1600m.  She won pole vault and the 1600m and was part of the second place 4x8 team.
