Track GMC Recap

Posted on: May 14, 2019
GMC Recap
GMC week was a success!  The jv squad started us out on Monday.  We had a really good time with this group in their last meet of the season, and we are already excited for next year and the big things these team members promise to bring with them.  At the varsity meet, our squads represented Oak Hills with pride.  Both our boys and girls teams earned 6th place finishes in our very strong conference.  We had two conference champions:  James Schmidt in the1600m and Brandon Gaddis in the Shot Put.

JV Athletes of the Week
Our jv athletes of the week who are being recognized for their superior performances and Antonio Buccino and Lauren Dorsel.  Both freshman had 6th place finishes in the discus!

Varsity Athletes of the Week
Avery Aull- Avery has been chasing last year's personal best in the pole vault all season, and it came at the right time.  She jumped 9' at GMC and placed 7th.  Last season, she the only Oak Hills girl to score any points in the jumps and she repeated this contribution again.  To add to her pole vault performance, she also ran a personal best in the 200m, making her the current fastest 200m runner on our team.

Sam Seibert- Going into the 3200m run, the coaches shared with Sam that he had an outside chance of placing top 8 if he ran a good race.  He started out strong, but faded from contention into 10th place after the 5th lap.  With one lap to go, Sam was 50m behind the 8th place competitor, and he does not have a history of having a fast kick at the end.  Despite these factors, somehow Sam mustered up the will to sprint and pass 2 runners and narrowly earn his first GMC place for the Highlanders.

District Championships
This Wednesday marks the beginning of the state tournament.  After both days of the District meet, the top 4 athletes in each event will qualify to the Regional meet at Wayne high school.  It is do or die time.  Without a top 4 finish, an athlete's season ends here.  We have several hopeful regional qualifiers and we approach this week with great excitement!  The meet lineups are attached.

Track & Field Awards Night
On May 23 at 6pm, we will be hosting our spring awards night.  For the first hour, everyone is together in the gym, then we will break off and have our track & field awards after that.  This is an event for every team member and their families; please plan to attend!
