Week #6 Princeton Recap

Posted on: September 26, 2024

Princeton Recap
We looked at the forecasted weather for the Princeton Meet and went into Saturday with a solid plan.  Our team's strategy was to run the first mile at an easier pace than usual.  The thought process behind this scheme was meant to address the extreme heat and help the body's internal temperature to stay within a reasonable range for the first half of the race.  The coaches were thrilled to watch the guys start the race far back in the pack from where they normally would be.  This sounds like a silly thing to say, but the trust we had in the team's preparation and cerebral approach to racing were validated as they slowly crept up through the ranks as the races persisted.

We have said time and time again, "times don't matter in cross country."  With the crazy slow times that came from the Princeton meet, it is obvious that the conditions/course weren't going to give up PRs.  But to make a plan, follow it even after exhaustion sets in and have that plan yield the results we were looking for is a thing to celebrate.  The JV boys finished 3rd (2nd if you discount Colerain's varsity who ran in the JV race) and the varsity boys were 2nd.

Athletes of the Week
Varsity
Matt Doherty- Matt started running cross country as a senior this year.  His zeal and eagerness to excel have been a welcomed addition to our team.  Matt's hard work has paid off and he has been in the top 5 for the Highlanders for every race so far this year.  The exemplary way that he carries himself has helped to shape our team.

JV
Joey Wiechman- Joey started the season late but has definitely caught up to his teammates.  Despite the intense heat at the Princeton Invite, Joey managed to run a season best!  His positive attitude and lack of excuses surely contributed to his great race.

Team Dinner
The team dinner this week is on Thursday at Miles Rhodes' house.  Their address is  2426 South Rd.  Please plan to arrive by 5:30 after practice.  When you arrive, you may park in the grass next to the driveway or on Pickway and walk across the street.  You must take a shower before showing up to team dinner.

Centerville Saturday Night Lights Meet
Centerville is a huge meet with over 5000 competitors in 16 races.  They don't finish assigning races to each school until Monday.  Therefore, we don't know what time we will be racing yet.  There will be a JV bus departing likely between 1-3pm and a varsity bus around 5-6pm.   Spectator admission is $10 per car load.  It wasn't specified if they are taking cash and/or card.

I will be sending a follow up email on Monday or Tuesday with final Centerville info.
